Foam systems

Not every fire can be extinguished with water. Although firefighting foams still contain more than 90% of water, with the correct system design and application, the foam can effectively prevent the burning process. Flammable liquids which require a specific approach not only with regard to their storage and manipulation, but also during a fire are a typical example of such application. Depending on the foaming volume of the water and foaming agent, the fire extinguishing foams can be divided to heavy, medium and light foams. While less than 20 litres of heavy foam is formed from one litre of the foaming agent, with light foams the ratio is higher than 200.

Foam film coats the surface or fills the space, prevents the access of oxygen and thereby extinguishes the fire and simultaneously prevents re-ignition of the flammable liquid or material. As to extinguishing fires of flammable liquids, one of the primary factors that have to be taken into account for the correct design is whether or not the liquid is miscible with water, e.g. alcohols.

Fixed foam fire extinguishing systems are used for protection of warehouses and tanks with flammable liquids, production facilities, refineries, storage of hazardous materials, airport hangars, etc.
